Overview
The ISO 21448 (“SOTIF”) standard provides a mutually complementary framework alongside ISO 26262 (“Road Vehicles – Functional Safety”) that is crucial for developers of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Autonomous Vehicles (AV). The well-known “Functional Safety” aspects of ISO 26262 are expanded by the SOTIF framework to include “Functional Performance” in order to create guidance for current and future solutions for the implementation of highly automated driving functions. SRES instructors lead this training as senior industry practitioners with experience implementing functional safety and SOTIF processes across global OEM and supplier development programs.
This certificate training helps your team understand the normative objectives and informative requirements of the ISO 21448 standard. The training introduces the standard’s requirements and illustrates how to implement these requirements with the help of examples and interactive exercises. Since the safety life cycle of the ISO 26262 standard forms the basis for the SOTIF process, additional requirements of the SOTIF standard are highlighted during this training. An optional exam to obtain a SOTIF Professional (SOTIFPRO, SGS-TÜV Saar) certificate is available on the afternoon of the last day of the training.
Details
As an extension of the functional safety framework defined in ISO 26262, this training presents the interpretation and practical implementation of ISO 21448 requirements for safety managers and engineers developing partially or fully automated systems.
Given the nature of the SOTIF risk reduction framework, the engineering focus is primarily at the vehicle and system level—making this course particularly relevant for system developers and testers involved in verification and validation activities.
The final evaluation of “Safety of the Intended Functionality” is conducted through a release process, which can be integrated with the ISO 26262 Functional Safety Assessment. This makes the training valuable for safety assessors preparing for more comprehensive and efficient reviews of ADAS and AV systems.
Objectives
This course is designed for engineers, managers, system developers, testers, and safety professionals working on partially or fully automated vehicle systems. It focuses on the application of ISO 21448 (SOTIF) to address the limitations of functional performance and ensure safety in the absence of system malfunctions. The course consists of lectures, practical exercises and examples, discussions, and offers opportunities for questions and exchange of experience from SecuRESafe’s SOTIF experts.
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and scope of ISO 21448 and how it complements ISO 26262
- Identify and evaluate SOTIF-specific hazards arising from functional insufficiencies and triggering conditions
- Apply the SOTIF safety lifecycle, from specification to release and operation
- Use the Hazard Identification and Risk Evaluation (HIRE) method to assess risks in complex driving scenarios
- Integrate SOTIF engineering activities at the vehicle and system level, particularly for ADAS and AV functions
- Develop appropriate verification and validation strategies for known and unknown hazardous scenarios
- Prepare for and contribute to the SOTIF release process, including assessment and safety case development
