SRES SafeStack | November 2026

SRES SafeStack is the monthly newsletter from SecuRESafe (SRES), featuring expert insights on functional safety, AI assurance, cybersecurity, autonomous systems, and robotics. Each edition includes technical articles, industry developments, upcoming training opportunities, and company news.

Interested in applying these concepts within your organization? Explore our consulting services, view upcoming public training programs, or contact us at info@sres.ai.

How can robot safety keep up with AI? In this edition of SafeStack, we share our latest Fireside Chat, now available to watch, featuring special guest Marcus Rau of SGS-TÜV Saar. The discussion explores the standards, sensing challenges, and safety approaches shaping industrial, mobile, and humanoid robots.

We also look ahead to SRES AI Safety Week, our remaining public training for 2026, and upcoming conferences SRES will be attending, sponsoring, and speaking at. Keep reading for our latest insights and training opportunities.

How Can Robot Safety Keep Up with AI?

What happens when a robot makes an unsafe decision even though its hardware and software are working as designed? How do we demonstrate that perception is safe enough to protect a person? And how do we emergency-stop a humanoid that needs active control to stay balanced?

SRES co-founders Jody Nelson and Gokul Krithivasan joined Marcus Rau, Head of the Certification Body for Functional Safety and Cybersecurity at SGS-TÜV Saar, to explore these questions and the evolving safety landscape for AI-enabled robots.

The discussion examines how established standards such as IEC 61508 and ISO 13849 connect with the developing ISO/IEC TS 22440 series and emerging robotics standards. They also discuss perception, system-level hazard and risk analysis, and the evidence needed to support a credible safety argument.

From the audience Q&A: Can scenario-based safety analysis replace sensor-specific requirements?

Scenario-based analysis can help teams explore hazardous behaviors and edge cases, but it does not replace selecting sensors with appropriate performance for the intended application. The panel also discussed how existing high-integrity sensors may be reused in a new application, provided they are evaluated for its operating conditions.

Upcoming Public Training

AI Safety Week | November 16–20

As AI moves into safety-related functions across vehicles, robotics, and other physical systems, engineering teams face challenges involving data, model behavior, validation, runtime monitoring, and safety assurance.

SRES AI Safety Week brings together two live virtual courses: ISO/IEC TS 22440, which addresses functional safety and AI systems across industries, and ISO 8800, which focuses on AI safety for road vehicles.

ISO/IEC TS 22440: Functional Safety and AI Systems Training | November 16–17

Explore the emerging approach to functional safety for AI systems and the challenges introduced by data-dependent and difficult-to-predict behavior. This two-day course examines the AI safety lifecycle, hazard and fault analysis, architectural mitigations, data quality, validation, runtime monitoring, and AI-based development tools.

ISO 8800: AI-Safety Professional (AISP) Training | November 18–20

This three-day course explores the assurance challenges AI introduces in safety-critical automotive systems. Participants build from foundational AI concepts toward the application of automotive and AI safety standards, including ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and ISO/PAS 8800.

Attendees have the option to take the AI-Safety Professional (AISP) certificate exam, accredited by SGS-TÜV Saar, following the course.

ISO 26262 Functional Safety Training | December 7–10

Develop a practical understanding of ISO 26262 across the automotive functional safety lifecycle. This four-day live virtual course combines practical examples, exercises, and discussion led by SRES instructors with experience implementing functional safety across automotive development programs.

Attendees have the option to take the Automotive Functional Safety Professional (AFSP) certificate exam, accredited by SGS-TÜV Saar, following the course.

Meet SRES at Upcoming Conferences

International Robot Safety Conference | November 3–5

SRES Senior Consultant Allan Watson will be attending the International Robot Safety Conference at Huntington Place in Detroit, hosted by A3 – Association for Advancing Automation.

Allan is a systems and safety expert with over 25 years of experience, including work across automotive, aerospace, and robotics. If you’ll be there and would like to connect, send Allan a message. He’d be happy to meet up and talk safety.

Humanoids Summit Silicon Valley | December 1–2

SRES is sponsoring Humanoids Summit Silicon Valley. If you’re attending, stop by booth 11 and connect with our team, including co-founders Jody Nelson and Gokul Krithivasan.

On December 2 at 11:00 a.m., Jody Nelson will present “The Emerging Safety Architecture for Physical AI: Integrating Functional Safety, SOTIF, and AI Assurance” as part of the summit’s breakout sessions.
